Practice Safe Social 20 Updated A blueprint for teaching the responsible use of social media eBook Chris Syme

The comparison between sex and social media is not just to flag your attention. One youthful misstep in social media can limit someone's career for a long time. And a habit of even borderline social behavior can kill your chances for getting a job. Practice Safe Social quotes a study by Reppler that showed 69% of employers have rejected a candidate because of what they saw on social media sites.

Practice Safe Social also talks at length about privacy settings, and goes through dozens of examples of bad tweets, inappropriate responses and the like. If you are coming from a college or high school athletics program, this book will be especially on the mark for you. Syme started out with social media for a college athletics program.

If you have a teen, or a pre-teen, this would be an excellent book to read with them, even if you only read the parts that are relevant to personal use (the sections on loyalty are more slanted for a business audience). Having your teen know the basics of good behavior on social media might save some headaches come college application time. Surely, if employers are looking at social media activity, colleges will be, too.

Practice Safe Social 20 Updated A blueprint for teaching the responsible use of social media eBook Chris Syme Reviews

The problem with books about social media is that they are out of date by the time the ink dries. However, in the case of this book, I'm not sure that it ever would have been timely. It's a nice general overview of the world for social media for people who just need an overview. However, as a professional looking for "best practices" to share and pass along, I really was disappointed. It was definitely a "safe" book, just not insightful or something that added new information.
In the opening of Practice Safe Social Chris Syme compares social media to the out-of-control bus from Keanu Reeves movie "Speed." I'd like to refer to a scene from another Keanu Reeves movie to help you understand this eBook. In the 1999 movie "The Matrix" Neo (Keanu Reeves) is offered a choice between a red pill and a blue pill with this advice, "You take the blue pill - the story ends, you wake up in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe. You take the red pill - you stay in Wonderland, and I show you how deep the rabbit hole goes. Remember, all I'm offering is the truth - nothing more." Chris's latest book is the red pill. You need to ask yourself - Do you want to understand the power and potential downfall of social media as well as how to harness it? If you do - read this book. Or would you prefer to remain ignorant of the power of social media until it's too late? The choice is yours all Chris offers is the truth.
I've followed Chris's work online for the past couple of years, and I've consistently found her to be one of the most insightful bloggers in the social media space.

Her new book delivers on its promise to help readers practice safe social. This is a to-the-point and empowering guide, packed with current data and compelling examples that reinforce the author's larger points.

If everyone read her book prior to establishing a personal or professional social media presence - and they should - there would be far fewer "social media disaster" stories for me to feature on my Mr. Media Training blog. But this book isn't just about avoiding social media nightmares - it's also about creating the type of positive online presence that builds brands and enhances reputations.

This is a wonderful resource that every brand manager should read - and assign to his or her entire staff.
I have known Chris to be a leader in social media strategy - especially in my world, college athletics - for quite a while. I read her latest, "Practice Safe Social" recently and thoroughly enjoyed it as a practical manual on limiting the dangers (and harnessing the power) of social media.

Among the most valuable portions in the book deals with privacy policies. Even as someone who makes their living in the digital/social space, I found many important anecdotes in here that helped me clean up my social footprint. She notes how fast things change, so focuses more on the big picture and things to look at in privacy than specifics (which is helpful).

She then dives into the mistakes that primarily young people (but not exclusively) may make on social. At times you wonder why people would have to be told some of the things they're doing online should not be done, but one look at the headlines shows you this is not the case.

I really liked how she ties it up on the end on a positive note. While fraught with perils, there can be amazing power in using social media correctly. I have met many great professional connections originally on social media and find it a great way to network and learn more about my field.

While I have known for a while that social media was for more than telling the world what you had for breakfast, I hope that others who are hesitant to dive in will read the book and do so "Safely".
Using social media is easy, using it well requires a plan. Chris Syme lays out a perfect blueprint for using social media in a responsible way.
Common sense review and straightforward plan for reputation management. Worth the time and the cost to read. Would recommend as a good first read on the subject.
I needed this book for a cyber security class. Very informative and well written. Would read outside of a school setting.
